The Ikarao Shell S1 10.1-inch Smart Karaoke Machine is making waves as the ultimate all-in-one karaoke solution for homes and small gatherings. Featured as the top pick in a recent NYT Wirecutter review by Thom Dunn, the Shell S1 stands out with its built-in touchscreen, integrated microphones, and compact portability—bringing professional-grade features into a sleek, user-friendly package.
A Karaoke System That Does It All
Unlike many traditional karaoke setups that require multiple components, the Ikarao S1 combines everything you need into one lightweight, portable case. It includes a built-in 10.1-inch touchscreen tablet preloaded with popular karaoke apps like YouTube, Smule, and KaraFun (with a free 6-month subscription). This means you can stream your favorite songs and lyrics instantly—no additional devices required.
Its smart design features include:
- Self-charging wireless microphones stored neatly inside the unit
- USB-C charging for easy power management
- HDMI output to connect to a TV for larger lyric displays
- AUX, USB, and TRS inputs for additional audio sources or instruments
Performance and Sound That Impresses
Powered by dual 1-inch tweeters and two 3.5-inch subwoofers, the Shell S1 delivers up to 280 watts of room-filling sound. It’s loud enough for lively gatherings but refined enough for everyday enjoyment. Whether you’re singing solo or hosting a duet, the quality of audio playback and microphone responsiveness enhances the experience.
Each microphone has individual volume controls, and users can cycle through fun vocal effects directly from the mic. While there’s no master limiter for volume, the onboard touchscreen allows for quick adjustments when needed.
Effortless Setup and Portability
The Shell S1 is ready to go straight out of the box. Setup takes minutes—just power it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and you’re ready to sing. At under 12 pounds, it’s light enough to carry anywhere, even for kids. The included strap adds to its mobility, making it perfect for parties, park picnics, or even neighborhood karaoke strolls.
Designed for Fun
While the touchscreen could be more responsive and the visual light show is modest, the overall experience is one of fun and simplicity. Users praised the clear soundstage, quick app access, and convenience of having all components stored in one place. It’s a device that truly puts performance and enjoyment front and center.
The Verdict
The Ikarao Shell S1 is a thoughtfully designed, all-in-one karaoke machine ideal for music lovers who want instant, high-quality entertainment. Whether you’re organizing a family karaoke night or just love belting out your favorite hits, the S1 is your go-to party companion. With its built-in tech, easy transport, and solid audio performance, it sets a new benchmark for home karaoke systems.
